Now, in my previous post, I said I overclocked my newly-bought pentium 2180, from its original 2,0GHz to 2,8 GHz, which is a 40% climb. The question is, is it worth the fuss? How much improvement will I see?
I will happily answer that question. For this purpose, I did some benchmarks with stock speed, and with overclocked speed.
results:

Yes, I am using notepad. Yes, I am using gray background, Yes, I am too lazy to make a proper chart. Sue me.
Now, back to the result. You can see that in CPU-intensive benchmark, the score goes up by a factor of 1,4, as expected by the clockspeed raise. But on GPU-intensive ones, the improvement are noticeably smaller.
in GPU-intensive benchmarks, my 8600GT showed us its full potential from the beginning, not even a 200% overclock can bring its score (much) higher.
But then again, in CPU intensive tasks, such as video encoding (which I do quite a lot), the improvement will be noticeable.
So, is overclocking worth it? Yes, I think so. Then again, it makes me feel somewhat über.
