After a while searching around, I realize that the number of people reviewing my exact graphics card is  zero. So I think I should do it myself. What are those reviewers doing, not reviewing a card this great?  Here goes, enjoy the ‘review’.

My current graphics card is a humble GeForce 8600GT. I’m happy wih it, it is faster than what average people are using.

End of review.

Alright, I know…

I think bought this card around December last year. I didn’t actually want to buy a 8600gt. I was looking for a HD2600PRO. After comparing prices between one store and another, I met a nice fella that’s offering me this 8600GT for IDR 935.000. (about US$ 100, that’s cheap here…)

After I reassured myself that I was not dreaming and made sure that the card indeed has DDR3 instead DDR2, because I heard that DDR2 has personality problem, I bought it.

Here it is:

Empty Box shot Aww… ain’t it cute?

That’s only the box, I’m afraid. Here’s the card itself:

8600GT That white stain is heatsink grease. Don’t ask me how it get there, just look at the card. Let me tell you a secret I heard: If a graphics card have those white-cylinder-thingy on it, it’s a good sign.

Installing a graphics card is a really easy task. If you’re not sure how,  ask your computer-savvy-friend to do it. Here’s the graphics card in my case:

Ready to go I don’t have enough spirit to arrange the cable, so I’ll let it be like that for now.

After all those tiring steps of unpacking, installing the card, and installing the driver, I started playing games. And let me tell you, the experience is very good, all games and game demos I tried runs smoothly with all the eye-candy turned on at 1024x768, which is the maximum sensible resolution for my 17-inch CRT.

How good is it?

Here’s a quick fix: I got around 4800 3dmark06 score, average of 30 fps in crysis with medium setting, playable framerate on oblivion, and average of 35 fps in Medal of Honor: Airborne and Bioshock. I’m using a Pentium D 925, Gigabyte GA-945GCMX-S2 with 2GB of RAM. All parts of my PC besides the 250GB harddrive, power supply, Optical drives, and the 8600GT were given to me by my uncle Isnan, by the way, Thank you!

As I wrote above, I really like this card, I guess it still can cope with next year’s games if i drop the resolution to 800x600 or turn the detail a bit down, which is fine for me.
